Coffee in LA

[title]
Coffee in LA, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I'm trying to draw more and be less inhibited while doing so, and trying to get more people drawing.

I've been traveling occasionally down to the LA area for work recently and met some truly cool individuals. I was actually able to encourage (i.e. hound) one to come out to do a little public drawing. It was hard not to be distracted by the chess club that had taken over the coffee shop.

I drew the lid sort of blind contour style, at least the outline, then filled in some of the details a bit. Quick and fun with a red micron (I've only ever drawn in black - I'm so uptight).

olive oil

[title]
olive oil, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I haven't drawn much in a while - laid off, ruptured achilles, new job, etc. Well, no more excuses. In trying to rally others to draw and explaining how little time it takes (just 5 minutes a day) I realized what a hypocrite I was being. So here's something new.

We took my mom out for dinner for her birthday. I liked the shiny green olive oil bottle, especially the crazy distorted view from the top. I tried to exaggerate that a bit, but it didn't really work out that great. I still like how the drawing turned out though.

DJ Hero

[title]
DJ Hero, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I was finally inspired to draw, its been a while. Here's my birthday/christmas gift from my family - DJ Hero. Its the coolest....seriously.

Shout out to A-dizzle Wizzle for letting me pretend to be a DJ behind real turntables (which is way harder than DJ hero) - in the real LBC (home of Snoop Dog, you KNOW) no less.

sketchez

As if I don't have enough to do and too many commitments already, I'm considering compiling another zine. Not sure what form it may take. I was just playing with some fonts and a possible cover.

New hand-carved rubber stamps

[title]
gears, originally uploaded by Rymann.

Well, I haven't really done anything creative for a while. It's been even longer since I have posted something. But I was finally inspired to sit down today and carve a few new stamps. Some were experiments.

The gears were inspired by the work at Comfortable Shoes Studio one of which was created using a gear-shaped mask.

I like the idea of stamps that can be used to create repeating patterns or overlapped for cool effects.

The last one I've been wanting to do for a while - a Wii remote to go with the classic Atari 2600 joystick I created a while back.

zine

zine, originally uploaded by Rymann.

Well I haven't gotten around to creating a second zine yet...and may never get to it. However, after reading this post by Roz Stendahl I decided to send in a copy of my "Construction Equipment Guide Zine". Here's more from the process along the way.

frog

[title]
frog, originally uploaded by Rymann.

I haven't found, er, uh, I mean MADE time to draw much lately. Most aren't flickr/blog worthy anyway. I drew this from a picture on the cover of my son's Ranger Rick magazine. Frogs are cool.

Its a little unfinished. Partly because that's how I like, partly because that's how the picture was cropped, and partly because that was about the time my daughter stumbled out of the tree fort. Not to worry. She's young and limber and the place where she fell was only a few feet off the ground.

lookup

[title]
lookup, originally uploaded by Rymann.

It has been a WHILE! Yes, after being unemployed for 6 weeks I ruptured my Achilles tendon, then got a job offer. Three weeks on the job...all with a cast a crutches. So I've been on a drawing hiatus.

This is an idea I had for an entry in the moly_x_60 exchange. Just testing it out. It turned out a lot better than I thought.

What do you think?

moly_x_60

Well, a dream has been realized, I'm finally a part of one of the many moly exchanges. Well, maybe that's a little dramatic, but I am excited. I'm a part of the moly_x_60 exchange. No themes, necessarily, just a free-for-all sketchbook exchange with 5 other great artists. Check out all the other exchanges at flickr.

I just sent mine off to Boz and I'm getting ready to make my mark on Parita's. Stay tuned, check back often, and check in with the moly_x_60 blog. More cowbell.

Economic Stimulus

economic stimulus (by Rymann)

This is something I hadn't thought of doing until my wife suggested it. I found a nice board with a routed contour around the perimeter, painted it black, and mounted one of my excavator drawings to the front. I rubber stamped the numbers and added a clock kit from Michaels. Voila.

This is part of a lot which will include four framed and matted prints (dozer, loader, water truck, and roller) I'm donating to my son's school auction.

UPDATE: The school auction was last night. My clock and 4 framed prints sold for full price. Woohoo! I was a little concerned because they started bidding at about 30%.

something different...

Not sure what I was going for here. I started out with a simple contour drawing, but that wasn't enough, so I did a bit of hatching. I still wasn't feelin' it. Then I went a little crazy with the brush pen and gray marker to arrive at this. The process felt good, not sure about the outcome.

Here is the original cell phone photo that I took for future drawing reference.

Here's what it looked like after a little manipulation...goin' for that lomo look.
